I have kids and my number one goal is making it home safely. Because of this, I do not drive weekend evenings or late nights. The latest I drive is 8 or 9pm. Unfortunately, this means that I miss out on some of the best bonuses and streaks. While rideshare driving is still pretty safe in general, there are certainly exceptions. Let’s be real with each other – you are inviting strangers into your personal space. Drivers are assaulted – including sexual assault (read this and this). Here are some tips to consider to be as safe as possible:

  1. Listen to your “gut.” If you don’t feel safe, cancel the ride and keep it moving. This is the most important tip. There is no ride worth putting your safety in jeopardy.
  2. Buy a camera. Having a recording device in your car is a pretty good deterrent for bad behavior. There are a lot of options out there that are not that expensive.
  3.  Follow the rules. Don’t accept rides from large groups – especially late at night. There is a reason that both companies offer “XL” options. Remember that you are outnumbered in your car. So keep your door locked until you confirm the passenger(s). If you arrive and there are five people waiting for a ride, cancel the ride and keep it moving.
  4. Always be aware of your surroundings. If possible, position your car facing the exit. In apartment complexes, I always do a quick u-turn when I arrive so that if I don’t feel safe, I can exit the property more quickly.
  5. More importantly, remember rule #1.
